Has Anybody Experienced Gastro Issues (such As Severe Heartburn) With Xeljanz?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

My rheumatologist put me on it a few weeks ago. About a week into treatment my GERD (that had been completely under control for years) flared up like crazy. Nothing helped. I finally asked to stop the med and doc said okay. Within a few days the pain has gotten a lot better. Doc says that this is not a known side effect of Xeljanz. I guess every body reacts differently so maybe I will need to add this drug to the growing list of RA treatments that I can't use. Sigh.

My rheumy told me stomach issues were definitely a side effect of Xeljanz. She said it was hard on the stomach. I have an ulcer and she is very reluctant to prescribe it for that reason.

Thanks to everyone who replied! It also helped me to learn that I was not alone in having increased gastro distress as a side effect. It's one of those things that if it were minor, no biggy...you deal with it. However, when the side effect is beyond the pale, you have to put the drug in question onto the pile of "Drugs I Simply Cannot Take (or that do not work)." The pile grows larger as time goes on. In the next few weeks I will be trying Actemra. While it is disappointing to have to start over with a new treatment, I just thank heaven that there are so many options! Can't give up, you know! @A myRAteam Member -- I know it can be scary but I just consider myself a warrior against my conditions RA and fibromyalgia. And what do warriors do? They fight! These medications are our weapons. With our doctors monitoring us religiously and standing by our sides, we march!

I took Xel Janz for 6 months and relied on Tums a lot. Since I stopped it, I've been fine.

I found this forum by searching for xeljanz and heartburn. It is almost unbearable. I couldn’t figure out why it was so bad because I haven’t dealt with it in years. I finally realized that the only new thing is this medication. I’ve been taking it for almost 3 weeks and I’ve been in less pain so I may just have to live with the heartburn 🤷🏾‍♀️ Thank you @A myRAteam Member for posting
