Does Anyone Else Avoid Using Their Handicapped Parking Placard Because Of The Looks And Comments They Get From Strangers?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Some people in parking lots are very rude and even confrontational about anyone who parks in a handicapped spot without a wheelchair or being a senior citizen. Despite how much I should use it or how I might feel after walking in a store for over an hour, I avoid using it and, sometimes, get stuck walking from the back of the lot. This is through limping and discomfort all because of the stares and comments from strangers, because I don't "look" sick or I'm not "old enough." I've been verbally… read more

Members shared powerful stories about being verbally confronted, followed, and accused of faking their disability when using handicapped parking due to their relatively young age or invisible illness, with many admitting they avoid using their placards despite legitimate need to escape the judgment and shame. Several members offered encouragement to use the placard without explanation or guilt, emphasizing that strangers' opinions are not worth the physical toll of walking long distances in pain, and suggesting practical strategies like carrying a cane for visibility or parking near cart returns on better days. A recurring theme was learning to prioritize personal health over the comfort of judgmental strangers, with many members describing a shift from shame to self-advocacy after years of enduring unnecessary pain to avoid confrontation.

That is horrible. I've never had anyone say anything to me but I've been given angered looks.

I understand the frustration with people not having a plaqard or even using someone else's. But honestly, I know not everyone has the outward appearance of needing a handicap space.

Personally, I don't use it unless necessary. Not bc of concern of anything other than getting the walking excerise and movement when I am able. With cooler months approaching, I will need it more though. If not for the pain but the leg weakness and fatigue!

I use mine in the cold weather mostly. I would ignore those ignorant people if you can. Unfortunately, if we don't look handicapped they don't realize what we're going through. RA is tough. I always feel like people think I'm faking. I don't care anymore. Don't have the strength to. Lol! Take care!

Narrow minded people, that is awful. I have a friend who looks like a biker, big guy. He has 20% heart function he has put up with the same garbage. He says it is their problem and he ignores them, but I know it is very hard for him.

I actually had a man watch me go into the liquor store with my husband and put a note on my windshield and it said you don't have a disability and he was reporting me to the police. When I came out he was nowhere to be found. I called the police and relayed what had happened and I never heard another thing after that. It is difficult sometimes because when you go into a shopping mall you probably look fine but when I come out a hour or two later I can barely walk. So now when I go shopping I take my cane with me because I sure going to use it by the time I come out

I use to do the same thing and feel that way but now I don't because I realize that I was only hurting myself in the end. I now hang my Handicapped placard and keep it pushing...I don't care anymore what others think or feel....God bless
