Auto Immune Protocol

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
San Antonio, TX

My doctor has recommended the Auto Immune Protocol diet? Has anyone tried this? Any success stories? Any tips and tricks? It seems very restrictive and I am overwhelmed.

The AI protocol is VERY successful with many RA sufferers. Yes, it's difficult to implement, and it can seem restrictive and overwhelming, but here's my story with it. Back several years ago when I was really bad, (4 specialty doctors, 6 medications), I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try. It was hard, but I was already cooking for my daughter with many dietary restrictions, so I just tweaked what I was doing to comply with AI diet. Husband wasn't too happy, but he has his grill, and he knows where the grocery stores are!
I concentrated first on healing my gut. Probiotics and probiotic rich foods. Over time I stated to feel better. And better. And better. I kicked up my nutritional intake with high quality supplements, added in Whole Foods known to be high in naturally occurring anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants, I started doing regular, gentle detoxes, and after about 18 months I was a completely different person.
The best part? I lost much needed weight, and because I felt better I started on a baby level exercise plan. All those things have gotten me to the point where I haven't seen a Dr (other than primary) in almost 2 years.
I learned that each of us is different. We will all have our own unique set of challenges, and foods that cause flare for some will have no reaction in others.
If you can't do the AI protocol full-on, I suggest targeting sugar, alcohol, anything highly processed, anything with added chemicals, MSG especially.
Try to think the way your grandmother prepared food. From whole food, right?
I'd be happy to share more if anyone wants to start a message chain with me.

I've done it and had great success with reduction in symptoms. The problem is that it's very restrictive. It's hard to be compliant when the other people in your home are eating salsa and chips or well, anything lol

It was most helpful in isolating some major intolerances that I can easily avoid now. It's worth a shot.
