Relief From Pain From Steroid Injections

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Salina, OK

I had steroid injections in my shoulder about 10 days ago. I 'thought' I was having a little relief but today the shoulder is killing me. From those of you who have had steroid injections my question is how long did it take for relief, how long did it last and did you have any side effects. My pain doc injected 7 different sites in the shoulder including major joint, rotator cuff, toward the collarbone, etc. I'd really appreciate the wisdom of your experience.

Susie find out what milligrams does injecting you with because if it's not a strong enough to push then it's not going to work you're not going to feel it. And my doctor says I should feel immediate relief because she always puts novocaine in the beginning of the shot so when it goes in it should hit the area and I should feel immediate relief and that by the time that the novocaine wears off the steroids should be working at full strength and so if you don't feel that Novacane working then either he's not hitting the right spot or you just not going to have success with steroids injections in that area but I know when he does my niece put 40 milligrams or whatever steroids are used and I believe they use the same thing and my elbow and my shoulder the elbow worked a little bit shoulder that into me work at all just for some added information will be blessed and know that you're loved.

I had a steroid injection (80mg) in my hip in May for my knees (last injection was last December) . As far as I'm concerned it is a wonder drug and I will continue to get the injection every 5 - 6 months. The time will come when they will no longer be effective and I'll have to have surgery but until then I'm very happy with the steroid injections.

I always get a mixture of prednisone and voltaren (diclofenac sodium) injections in my bumb and they really work well for the pain. My rheumy uses lignocaine/prednisone/voltaren into a joint when it's really bad taking effect the next day and for days to come.

I usually have relief within a day or two. If you're getting that many injections and fairly regular, it's quite possible that they are no longer effective. After awhile they just don't work any more.

I receive a cortisone shot in my hip every 4 months for pain relief - I think it works very well
I'd rather this than any biologic treatment (I have both osteo & RA)
