Has Anyone Had Total Knee Replacement And Had Issues With Rehab On It?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I recently had total knee replacement and am having issues with being able to bend my knee back. This started immediately after surgery with first Physical therapy session so it is nothing I have/ had done or not done to make this happen. Also, after P.T. my leg turns black and blue and still have drainage from 1 week out after surgery. Mostly concerned with the bending issue. P.T. said something about the ligament connected to the muscle that they have to… read more

Members responded with empathy to someone struggling to bend their knee after total knee replacement surgery, offering both reassurance and practical insights based on their own experiences. Several members shared that scar tissue or arthrofibrosis can form immediately after surgery and may require follow-up imaging like an MRI, additional physical therapy, or even a second procedure to release adhesions, with one member describing a similar situation that took six months to resolve. A recurring theme was persistence and self-advocacy, with members encouraging the poster to keep communicating concerns to their medical team, stay patient through the painful recovery process, and trust that improvement is possible even when progress feels slow.

I had arthrofibrosis which came on straight away after having my second knee replacement so I knew I had a problem when I could not do the bending excercises.. I kept telling the consultant and physios but nothing was resolved until 6 months later when I had to have surgery to release all the scar tissue etc. I am now left with a partial bend. Hope you can get some relief as it's a painful time. Hopefully you will be ok and have a super knee like my first one which is now 12 years old and still going strong. I have both RA and osteo arthritis. best wishes. see the link attached here...

Thanks! You worry about yourself. I will suggest an MRI to my mom.

My dad had one last year and he borrowed an exercise bike from my aunt and he'd do a bit on it once or twice a day along with his exercises and he found it helped enormously.

No tests. Just the way it looked and felt.

Yes. Straight away but sometimes the consultants will dispute this but I know I felt mine stiffen up immediately after surgery. Don't be afraid to ask for check ups for this. Best Wishes
