Enbrel Hair Loss

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Royal Palm Beach, FL

Does anyone else have problem with hair loss while on Enbrel? My rheumatologist thinks it "might" be from the Enbrel bit I'm wondering if I should explore other causes. I have experienced hair loss in the past which was determined to be caused by stress but it was nowhere near this bad.

I've been on methotrexate, Enbrel, Orencia, Remicade, Actemra, and now Cimzia. I have actually had issues with hair loss from the very beginning! In fact it has been something that has driven me crazy! I can't even get the doctors to admit/agree that the biologics are the cause of my hair loss. Some say it's a nutritional issue, some say it's the disease, some say it's a vitamin issue....ugh! All I know is that I have been on various biologics for 13 yrs and I had no problems with hair loss until I started on them. All I can be thankful for is that I had a ton of very thick, natural curly hair, so at least I'm not showing any balding spots....yet anyway

I have been on prett much all the drugs too. Now on simponi aria and the hair loss is incredible! I didn't have a lot of hair to begin with. My son just developed alopecia last year. Lost all his hair, eyebrows, eyelashes. Still has some facial hair. He's 25 and was devastated. I try to follow the regime the hair specialist put him on. Rogaine, vitamin D forte, Allegra, Tagamet, and plaquenil. He had other treatments too, but these I could do without paying for a specialist. Helping a little so far.

Many of the injections/infusions we receive for RA are very similar to mild chemo and therefore have similar side effects. I have been on Enbrel, Orencia, Remicade, and Actemra and have had issues with hair loss while on all of them, the worse while I was on Remicade and now that I'm on Actemra it is pretty bad too. This is not to say that the meds are the only reason for hair loss. Nutritional problems, stress, and other things are also possibilities.

Yeah, I started losing my hair the same time I started on biologics and I'm on the fifth different biologic. My rheumatologist put me on folic acid right from the beginning but it doesn't seem to do anything for the hair loss issue. I will have to try the biotin and see if that helps. I'm going to be bald pretty soon the rate I'm losing it. It's just a good thing that it does how back in but if course that leaves me with a bunch of new growth, of different lengths, all the time and since I have naturally curly hair it tends to get frizzy. I've said some top my rheumatologist a couple of times but he didn't seem to be too concerned...typical guy, lol
