Any One Tried Hydroxychloroquine?

A myRAteam Member asked a question πŸ’
Ruidoso Downs, NM

My primary doctor is trying to help with treatment since the RA Dr said not to come back due to no health insurance and can not afford the treatments she wants to do and none of the other RA dr's in NM will deal with you with out insurance so primary is trying her best. Anyway, she told me to go the pharmacy and price Methotrexate and Hydroxychloroquine and let her know which one I want to try due to budget. Well the methotrexate is cheaper but from what I read the side effects are awful. The… read more

Hello there!
I took Hydroxychloroquine for a few years. It worked quite well and it didn't affect my vision. Ophtalmologist insisted I take it every other day, so, I'm sure that helped.
The best thing, is for you to try it and see how you feel. Give it a month or so, and you'll be able to tell.
Best of luck to you!
I had to give up alcohol completely, I miss the taste of a good margarita, but after multiple replacements, hospitalizations,
therapies, medications...etc, well....I had to decide.
Take good care of your hands!

Hello Susang, I'm Barbara I've taken both, methrotrexate was stopped, I still take plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), I still had flares on methrotrexate hair got thin, now taking Leflunomide plus I'm taking Kexzara an injections I am doing good. Taking plaquenil you need an optometrist for eyes checked. For me every 6 months. Have a Happy 😁😊 Sunday

@A myRAteam Member methatrexate did work well for me for a very long time, and I did have to go to the shots and I loved them. So easy, just a very little diabetic needle that goes into fat on leg or back of arm. And I pass out at needles but I did it!! Also they need to start you out on 2 or 3 mgs at a time and you take for a few weeks and if you do ok then up a little bit more. You do not want a doc that just tosses you on the max dosages. Plaquinil did not bother me at all either, and both ofthese two drugs kept the worse part of the disease away from me for about 8 years and I often times wonder if I should just start back at ground zero and go back to those two. :/ AS now I have been on so many and nothing seems to work or causes so much damage and side effects. I might just go back to those starter meds for RA again and I will let everyone know how I do. Good luck tyou

Methotrexate is a drug that works for a lot of people. It worked for me for quite awhile. But side effects, for me, involved my stomach being really upset from it. I tried the shots, but am such a coward I cried with every shot. So my RA doc took me off that. That was the only problem I had with Methotrexate.

Hello. I have tried both of these drugs. I was started on Methotrexate but developed problems breathing. So, now I take hydrochloroquine. No side effects but not really helping either. I hope you have better luck than I did:)
